Conversations tour
In case you have missed it, I know I have, Shel Israel, influential co-author of Naked Conversations and Rick Segal, Canadian VC and blogger are planning a whirlwind world tour and has earmarked South Africa as a stop. They are here somewhere around the 3rd of September though they still seem indecided on which city to visit, Cape Town or JHB? Here is my vote for Cape Town!
Google AdSense API
Google have opened up an AdSense API for developers.
To qualify for the beta you need to host content for registered users. Examples: Blogs hosts, wiki’s, forums etc. A minimum of 100000 page views per day is a further requirement.
From the AdSense blog:
By making it easy for publishers to sign up for AdSense and generate revenue, the API offers another compelling reason for publishers to choose your service over a competitor’s–and remain loyal to you. The AdSense API is great for publishers who don’t want the hassle of setting up their own accounts or dealing with cutting and pasting HTML snippets.
Looks like pretty good revenue opportunities when your publishers have a good couple months.
Death by Chocolate
Delectable LG Chocolate to be precise. This weekend the wife and I went out to explore the new shopping center that had opened around the corner from us and as often happens we got drawn into the local cellphone shop. Well it just so happens that the wife has an upgrade window coming up (I have been trying to convince her to sit it out and switch to a Vodacom contract) and as she is enquiring about when she can expect a handset upgrade, we are told that she can do it right away as they can put it through on something called a “premature” upgrade. Right. There goes the Vodacom idea flying out the window.

So now, which phone to buy? The wife is not interested in 3G or business functions or even a fancy camera. No, she needs to have a sexy phone, one that says “feminine”.
So, we had a look at the SLIVR the V3x (no longer sexy by the way), various permutations of the Sony Walkman phone and a couple others before laying eyes on the Chocolate, that was it. Case closed.
The Chocolate is an interesting phone no doubt and I reckon definitely a case of form over function, but there is no denying the drop dead gorgeous looks. Other pro’s are the thin form factor, very light weight and the high quality feel of the sliding mechanism. The odd ball feature are the buttons on the front face which are touch sensitive (i.e. no actual movement, like telefunken tv’s of old or new gen iPods
). Cons are the lack of expandable memory, relatively weak camera by modern standards (1.3 MP) and no 3G.
So basically a supermodel prety phone with not a lot in the brains department (refer to previous metaphore), I can live with that. Stay tuned for more once we take delivery.
Of further interest is the interesting blog marketing campaign that LG is conduction under the guidance of Niall Cook at UK based marketing firm Hill and Knowlton, they are basically sending off loaners for bloggers to review. It would be interesting to keep an eye on this one to see where it goes as this is still very much new terrain and certainly very daring. Do the bloggers have the guts to shoot down a product if they find it bad, I wonder?
Yahoo! Go on your TV
Remember Meedio? Meedio is that nice application you could install on most any windows PC to provide handy media centre type functionality to your TV out enabled PC in the livingroom, for a couple dollars.
Well, that company has now sold its IP on to Yahoo and a beta is already available for download, currently free!
I gave it a download and it looks like it still has all the good ol’ features that made Meedio so much loved, i.e. easy to use UI with clear fonts and layouts even on the TV, easy TV capture integration etc.
Unfortunately this version will only function on US based IP addresses, disable your net connection to bypass, hopefully this will be addressed soon to allow the rest of the world to play along as well..

Poor local 3G available ..
While at my mother’s place over the weekend in a developed area of Kuilsriver, I was upset not to have ANY 3g reception there. At home (Parklands) my receptions is “flaky”. And to compound to the problem, I am going away on Friday for a bit of R&R in J-Bay and with it being a premier SA holiday destination I thought I would a look at the 3G reception on the Vodacom site, turns out that it is VERY limited. The place we are planning on staying looks like it is right on the edge, oh well lets see, otherwise it will be back to slow GSM speeds. Vodacom ran an ad last night where they said: “3G reception nearly everywhere.” (or something to that effect) More like: “3g reception almost nowhere.”

Macs do Windows, too
Yup that is the little strapline for the big bomb apple dropped on us all today, they now officially support Windows XP utilising a little partition manager called Bootcamp. Read about it on engadget here.
I must tell you that I was/am super sceptical about it, I actually though it was a belated April fools, I even tried the download and it is downloading some or other 83Mb file. Fact? Or fiction?
This guy claims he got it sort of running.
Interesting move by Apple, but I don’t think its going to give Steve B. and sleepless nights just yet, even though this will allow give XP users a chance to “ease” into OS X.
MyToday.com
MyToday.com is a smart “”public” aggregator (vs. “private” aggragator which is your own feed list, these ones are pre-prepared by experts for ease-of-use) hailing from india, it has various location or topic based areas called “daily’s” and using the friendly interface one can “browse” the very up-to-date content right on the site, or export the dailies as OPML. One thing I love about the site is that it gives you a very nice “at-a-glance” overview of the newest news and post in the categories or “panels” that you can switch on and off at will.
Another very handy feature that I use quite often is the mobile portal available via http://m.mytoday.com, nice for a quick news update.
The guys there have approached me to put together an OPML list for them and I have obliged, its viewable at http://www.mytoday.com/southafrica/, have a look, and send in feedback and suggestions.
