Unconferences rock!

Boy let me tell you I can't wait for BarCamp Cape Town to come along, we have found a venue now at a primary school in Kuilsriver and I am quite relieved to have that done.

I have just read a piece on ZDNet on what a success the recent Internet Identity Workshop that just took place in MountainView was and the writers' excitement was quite tangible.

I heard some similar comments from others. The ability for people to create their own agenda is incredibly powerful. If we'd done this as a traditional conference, we would have nailed down the agenda and speakers two months ago. By the time we got to the event, everyone would have been interested in something else. The unconference format allowed us to nail the sweet spot of the conversation without even trying. The people who came to the workshop did that naturally as a matter or participating.

I hope that we can capture some of this at BarCamp and I will be very proud if we do, after all, if you take away the fun and the horseplay and the social aspects (which are a large part of the attraction) the end-goal should be enlightenment of the audience as a whole and we should leave as better versed and excited technologists when the curtains are drawn at the end of the event.

Don't know about BarCamp yet? Go over to Tectonic and have a read.

Documentary: Stroller

http://www.capetownstroller.org/home.html

Stroller is a feature length documentary shot
in Cape Town, South Africa about two street children’s journeys to make sense of their pasts, survive the present and search for the strength to get off the street. In doing so, Stroller provides a fresh and provocative perspective on the social, cultural and economic elements that push children onto the streets, and the elements that hold them captive.

Poor local 3G available ..

While at my mother's place over the weekend in a developed area of Kuilsriver, I was upset not to have ANY 3g reception there. At home (Parklands) my receptions is "flaky". And to compound to the problem, I am going away on Friday for a bit of R&R in J-Bay and with it being a premier SA holiday destination I thought I would a look at the 3G reception on the Vodacom site, turns out that it is VERY limited. The place we are planning on staying looks like it is right on the edge, oh well lets see, otherwise it will be back to slow GSM speeds. Vodacom ran an ad last night where they said: "3G reception nearly everywhere." (or something to that effect) More like: "3g reception almost nowhere."

MyToday.com

MyToday.com is a smart ""public" aggregator (vs. "private" aggragator which is your own feed list, these ones are pre-prepared by experts for ease-of-use) hailing from india, it has various location or topic based areas called "daily's" and using the friendly interface one can "browse" the very up-to-date content right on the site, or export the dailies as OPML. One thing I love about the site is that it gives you a very nice "at-a-glance" overview of the newest news and post in the categories or "panels" that you can switch on and off at will.

Another very handy feature that I use quite often is the mobile portal available via http://m.mytoday.com, nice for a quick news update.

The guys there have approached me to put together an OPML list for them and I have obliged, its viewable at http://www.mytoday.com/southafrica/, have a look, and send in feedback and suggestions.

Where are the ITWeb feeds?

I have been looking for some sort of clue to where the feeds are for ITWeb, and up to now I have not managed to locate any. I hope its just stashed away somewhere amongst the tons of ads and other garbage, surely the leading technology news site in SA will have a feed, right? I hope so, let me know if you know it, I hope it is just a case of poor link placement.

If not I am starting to get a little concerned, it tweaks me that so many local sites haven't caught one yet.

Message to non-syndicated sites: C'mon guys, you're competitors are providing feeds, why cant you? Contact me, I can help.

US pundits say that Internet technologies are not yet ready for TV

Mark Cuban has in interesting post where is citing a a testimony by Craig Moffet stating that the US internet infrastructure is simply inefficient for the demand that will be placed on it in the next couple of years.

As we are entering the domain of REAL broadband applications like Internet TV and downloadable movies as the PC is slowly becoming an integral part of the home, it seems inevitable that the speed demand is going to move from the business and into the home, current over hyped technologies like WiMax will just be totally inefficient and copper/fibre technologies will reach their limits at around 20mbps. New technologies will need to be developed but they always carry prohibitive costs. Moffat states that he believes TV over Internet is not going to replace traditional broadcasting in this decade.

What is more worrying from a South African perspective is that we are still stuck on a measily 1mbps connections and firing it up to its full potential is the domain of the rich and famous.

We need to move to catch up or I for see a technological dark ages in our dear South Africa.

iBurst Phone

PCStuff has the scoop on an IP phone designed to run on the local iBurst network.

The graphic he has of it looks somewhat "dubious", but still seems like an interesting proposition.

The weird thing is that you need to plug in your iBurst PCMCIA card on the top of this thing so you will look kinda dorky with a massive brick stuck to your ear and then of course you have to make sure that stay within the reception area. Then there is the price of that darn modem as well...

Oh well, its a start I guess.

The Barcamp Difference

Simon Phipps writes:

The contrast between the two events was striking. SXSWi is impersonal, controlling, somewhat sterile by comparison with the energy of BarCamp. I can't help thinking that Unconference is the model more and more of us will adopt for the transfer of knowledge.

Yeah, and more fun and a heck of a lot cheaper! Don't miss out on BarCampCapeTown.
