Skypeout in the US now free, as in beer.

Yup, you heard right, if you are lucky to stay in the US or Canada you can make free calls within those countries for free, nada, zip, zilch … well until the end of 2006 anyhow.

Here is a quote from the official page:

Yes. It is really very, very free. There’s no prepayment, no minimum use, no subscription, no monthly fee, no nothing. You just download and install Skype and then you start calling. Both the caller and the number called must be in either the US or Canada. There are no strings attached.

This is probably notable as the first time in history that you can call to a standard telephone website for absolutely no charge (it says so on the site ok?!), although it is probably not much more than a full-loss marketing effort, I really hope they did their maths.
Probably means that the profit margin on local voice calls are very low after covering the cost of hopping onto the exchange?
